This quilted play mat was created with different recycled fabrics, including pre-consumer hemp scraps from HEMPEA. The white and beige pieces are hemp fabric, while the colorful accents are a mix of recylced fabrics. The pink one is a former linen curtain, the orange is a fine cotton and the blue a shiny and silky synthetic. The fabric on the back is recycled as well and so is the batting, which was harvested from a (very out of style 90s) secondhand play mat.
The front panel of the quilt is pieced together from different fabric strips. The strips were first sewn together as blocks and then cut again, flipped and re-arranged to create the pixeled design. A few more pieces were added around the four main pixeled blocks to make the play mat approximately as big as the secondhand batting. Finally the front panel, batting and back fabric were sandwiched together and quilted with a loose grid pattern. A trim, made from recycled fabric, was added around the edge to finish the piece.
This colorful play mat is a squishy soft quilt, that can be used on the floor or as a baby blanket. The colors and pattern are fun, yet minimal, so that the play mat can be a nice accent in any room. This piece is also great for your pets or even as a texile wall decoration. A truly versatile item, that can grow with you and your life circumstances.
HEMPEA is a finnish sustainable brand, creating eco-friendly home textiles from 100% hemp fabrics. This product is created with some of their pre-consumer scraps - cut-offs in the production process of their bedding and other products. Their high quality, ethically made hemp fabrics are too precious to waste, so we took all the small and odd shape pieces and created a small collection of unique Wasteless Wonders products with them.
