This pillow case was created with a patchworked base of pre-consumer hemp scraps from HEMPEA. The solid shapes were painted onto the fabric with water-based fabric paint. The fluffy and textured leaves and accents were created with various recycled yarns. Finally, the pillow was quilted and sewn together with secondhand sewing thread and recycled fabrics for the backing and back of the pillow case.
In case you order your pillow case including the inner pillow, you will receive a simple fitting insert, made with some thin weight fabric and stuffed with a variety of yarn and fabric scraps. This is one of the main ways how we keep our textile production completely zero waste.
While the texture is not as fluffy and even as a polyfil-pillow, the srap pillow is just as soft and works really well with the thicker quilted front side of this pillow. If you were to re-use your scrap pillow in another pillow case in the future, please be aware that the texture of it might poke through if the pillow case is too thin.
This pillow was created, using a variety of techniques. First, the base fabric was pieced together from large strips of hemp scrap fabric. Then the patchworked piece was painted by hand to create the large flat areas of the design. Missing pieces were then added using a punch needle from either side of the fabric, to create flat, embroidered looking sections, as well as fluffy carpet-like parts. Finally the front panel was quilted onto a piece of recycled backing fabric with free flowing lines. The back of the pillow is a simple envelope closure, which works without a zipper.
This pillow is a perfect way to take the taste of summer with you into the colder winter months. It adds a fresh and bright touch to any living room as an accent pillow on your sofa or arm chair. It also works great in your bedroom and gives a subtle feeling of warmth to any space.
HEMPEA is a finnish sustainable brand, creating eco-friendly home textiles from 100% hemp fabrics. This product is created with some of their pre-consumer scraps - cut-offs in the production process of their bedding and other products. Their high quality, ethically made hemp fabrics are too precious to waste, so we took all the small and odd shape pieces and created a small collection of unique Wasteless Wonders products with them.
